Love and Other Drugs

Movie: Love and Other Drugs

Review: Despite what some may say, Love and Other Drugs was not like other romantic comedies I have seen except in the most general of senses, in that it was a romantic comedy. I had not seen one set in the environment of pharmaceutical sales or with a main character who had Parkinsons disease, a setting which is very interesting as there are a lot of things wrong with health care and the system today. It gives one something to chew on while watching the rest of the movie.

There is a lot to like about the relationship between Jamie and Maggie. They have a raw intensity and passion for each other that was a bit much for some viewers, but in my opinion it was there to show how connected they were both physically and mentally. I thought their banter and teasing nature was cute. Nobody got wounded or sulked when teased but just laughed and teased back. The initial attraction between them started as an understanding of each others loneliness and vulnerability that allowed them to feel like someone else finally got them after easily charming others with nothing more than a fascade. Their relationship had passion, love, and a roller-coaster of emotions.

There was a scene midway through the movie where Maggie tells Jamie that even though she may have many other moments like the ones that she shared with him that it will never be as special or mean as much to her and my heart wanted to swell because I knew exactly what she meant and what it is like to love someone that much.

As they grew together, both characters changed and let go of their issues with commitment and love. They tore down the walls they had built to protect themselves and just let themselves fall. It was beautiful to me and I really enjoyed Love and Other Drugs.

Hereafter

Movie: Hereafter

Director: Clint EastwoodRelease Date: October 2010Writers: Peter MorganRun Time: 129Genre: Drama, Fantasy

Review: On the way home from seeing this terrific movie, I stopped at a light, a few cars in front waiting to turn right. Around us, the sun had just set, a full white moon was high and the reflections of brake lights bounced off gas stations and car dealerships.

What an amazing world we live in. There is so much in the five miles between my house and the theater where I saw the movie that I could never experience it all. Moments arrive and disappear and the the people shift, move, appear and disappear.

I think most of us need some kind of assurance that it all goes on forever, that our open windows arent just blacked over and sealed at death.

Clint Eastwood has made a quiet, reflective, thoughtful film on this condition, this need for forever. Its not a flashy paranormal probe of ghosts and goblins, spirits and such.

Taking three central lives we see our need for a hereafter from a French woman who has experienced something before being revived, from a twin boy who has lost his brother and from a lonely man who seems able to capture something from beyond this life. Or perhaps he just captures something from those who come to him.

Cecile De France is stunning as a television reporter who touches her own death and returns. Frankie McLaren is good as the young boy. And Matt Damons restrained performance is a revelation.

Eastwood has the assured hand that allows long segments in French with English subtitles and a juncture with two disasters and such a touchy feely subject, and yet it works. Quietly. Thoughtfully.

He also has the good sense to let us draw our own conclusions.

Burlesque

Movie: Burlesque

Director: Steve AntinRelease Date: November 2010Writers: Steve AntinRun Time: 119Genre: Drama, Musical, Romance

Tagline: It takes a LEGEND… to make a STAR!

Review: So, it is a movie about a lounge with signers and dancers. It is not a musical, but you expect to see dancing, sexy and songs. Burlesque delivers on all account, it is sexy without being naked, it is fun, the music is great.

I do not know why so many reviewers here say that Christina Aguilera is a bad actress, she gave quite a decent performance considering that, well, she is not an actress. And while Cher is not on the screen all the time, she is fantastic. For a woman in her sixties, wow…

The movie made me buy the soundtrack, Christina know how to sing and she is very good.

As for the background stories, they are there to give the movie some meaning but are not overly invading on the main content witch is signing and dancing. Those background stories are were the movie lost my 2 points, because you do not quite feel the urgency, stress of Tess money problems, everything runs like there is no problem at all.

All in all, it is a good, entertaining movie. it is gonna be in my bluray collection, just for the music and dancing alone.

The Green Hornet

Movie: The Green Hornet

Director: Michel GondryRelease Date: January 2011Writers: Seth Rogen, Evan GoldbergRun Time: 119Genre: Action, Comedy, Crime

Review: Ever since I heard about The Green Hornet, I expected a bad movie. It did not seem like it would work and boy was I wrong. I saw a screening of this recently, and walked in with zero expectations, and walked out having laughed throughout the movie and REALLY enjoyed the action and chemistry between Rogen and Jay Chou. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg did a fantastic job crafting this script, which could have been truly horrible, into a fun ride.

The true star of the movie is Jay Chou, aka Kato. His accent was sometimes hard to interpret, but he was surprisingly funny, and Kato-vision, time slows when his heart starts pumping during fights, turned out pretty cool in 3D.

Thank goodness Nic Cage walked away from this, and Christoph Waltz came in as the bad guy, because Christoph inhabited the role better than Nic could have. I enjoy Nic Cage, but he would not of worked in this movie, and with that character. Nic Cage would have been too over the top, where as Christoph went a subtle route.

The movie is not perfect, I did not feel Cameron Diaz added anything to the movie expect being the hot girl to create a rift between guys, but if you are looking for a pure escapist fun ride, then look no further than The Green Hornet.

Morning Glory

Movie: Morning Glory

Director: Roger MichellRelease Date: November 2010Writers: Aline Brosh McKennaRun Time: 107Genre: Comedy, Drama, Romance

Tagline: Whats the story?

Review: Morning Glory is about an ambitious small town producer, named Becky Fuller, of a slightly corny morning show. She moves up to a major networks failing morning program that needs serious help. The choice of bringing in Harrison Fords character was a brilliant and cunning move. The chemistry between Diane Keaton an Harrison Ford is worth seeing this film for. They are the comic relief which get the biggest laughs.

Jeff Goldblum provided a good mix to the cast and helped give the film a more dynamic impact. His supporting role was not a major character but his performance was enjoyable and provided a good character to move the plot along.

There are some less than perfect aspects about the script. The main character Becky is a little too caffeinated. This is explained in the character development but could have been tweaked to a more believable character. Some of the plot mechanism seemed forced. Such as Becky Fullers interview with another morning show. It made sense for the story, but in execution it felt more like a plot device than part of the story. The acting is enjoyable and the directing was well done.

This is a fun movie and worth seeing after you catch the block busters on your list.
